How to choose a facial: Finding the right one for your skin

Not sure which facial is right for you? Start with your main skin concern and our therapists will help you narrow it down.

Almost every new client (and some of our long-timers, too!) asks us some version of the same question: “Which facial is right for me?” It is a fair thing to wonder when our extensive treatment menu lists peels, peptides, LED, and mesotherapy, among many other options. The good news is that how to choose a facial comes down to two things you already know a fair bit about, which are how your skin behaves day to day, and what you would like it to be doing a few weeks from now. This guide covers both, then matches common concerns to the facials we offer here at Gaia Day Spa.

The short answer? To choose a facial, start with your main skin concern, whether that is dehydration, breakouts, uneven tone, fine lines, firmness, or dark spots, then adjust for your skin type and for how much time and commitment you have. Our therapists assess your skin at the start of every appointment, so don’t worry, you don’t need to have it all figured out before you book.

Start with your skin type and your skin concern

Skin type and skin concern are different things, and mixing them up is the most common reason people book a treatment that does not quite fit what they need. Your skin type is your baseline, usually described as normal, dry, oily, combination, or sensitive. Sensitivity sits on top of the other types rather than replacing them, so you can have skin that is oily and sensitive, or dry and sensitive. A concern is what is happening right now, such as breakouts, dullness, fine lines, or dark spots, and concerns shift with the seasons, stress, hormones, and the products you use. (Yes, it’s complicated, but that’s why beauty therapists can help!)

One distinction changes the answer more than any other. Dry skin is a type that produces less oil, while dehydrated skin is short on water, and dehydration can affect oily and combination skin, too. For example, if your skin feels tight and looks dull by mid-afternoon even though your T-zone is shiny, hydration is probably the missing piece, and a hydrating facial will serve you better than a purifying one.

Which facial is right for me? Match it to your main concern

Most people have more than one skin concern, so start with the one that bothers you most and let the rest follow. Our facials use Germaine de Capuccini products, a cosmeceutical-grade European professional skincare range, and you can find the same range to use at home in our online store.

  • Dehydration and dullness: The Hydrating Facial Therapy with 100% Collagen combines high molecular weight hyaluronic acid with a collagen sheet mask for skin that looks dewy and plump. The Plump and Fill Hydraluronic Facial takes hydration into the deeper layers of the skin and finishes with a cooling massage tool that works on fine lines.
  • Breakouts and congestion: The Purexpert Balancing Treatment uses soothing formulas to help clear breakouts, along with the blackheads and congestion that tend to come with them.
  • Uneven tone and a lack of glow: The Double Booster Vitamin C+ Ferulic Facial gives skin a concentrated antioxidant boost, and the Glass Skin Facial adds a superficial peel and active serums for a smooth, luminous finish. If your skin is dry or sensitive as well as uneven, the Antioxidising AOX System Chemical Peel is non-photosensitising, so it suits any time of year.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles: The Anti-Wrinkle Correcting Treatment is one of our top sellers, using two peptides to reduce muscle movement and fill existing wrinkles, while the Lift and Smooth Eye or Lip Treatment targets fine lines around the eyes or lips.
  • Loss of firmness: Lift and Firm works on lift in two directions as well as volume, for skin that looks firmer and more sculpted.
  • Dark spots: Pigment Therapy is a course rather than a single visit, with two salon treatments and a month of home treatment. We recommend a minimum of two sessions for recent or lighter spots and four for stubborn ones.
  • Rough texture and peach fuzz: Dermaplaning removes the surface layer of dead skin cells along with fine vellus hair, leaving a silky, smooth surface.

If you are drawn to more advanced technology, Mesoboost is a needle-free mesotherapy treatment that uses electroporation to improve cell absorption. LED light therapy and our treatment boosters can be added to several facials to increase results. Men’s skin has its own option in Amor for Men, a vitamin C facial with a detoxifying mask. And if nothing here sounds quite like you, the Thirsty Skin Facial is a signature treatment built around whatever your skin needs most.

Think about timing and commitment

The right facial also depends on how much time and commitment you have. Some suit a single visit, such as a 30-minute refresh before an event, while treatments aimed at a specific change, like pigment correction or Mesoboost, are designed as a course with sessions spaced seven to 10 days apart. Ask about the full plan as well as the first appointment, so you know what you are signing up for.

Tell us what is in your skincare routine (we won’t judge!)

Every facial at Gaia begins with an assessment, and we adjust the treatment to what we find, so the more you tell us the better the match. Mention any retinol or retinal, exfoliating acids, medications, allergies, recent sun exposure, cancer treatments, or pregnancy, because each can change which products and techniques suit you. If retinal has just joined your routine, our article on retinal is a good primer.

Skin that has just been resurfaced or exfoliated needs reliable sun protection, and daily sunscreen is a sensible habit all year in New Zealand. Our blog post on everyday SPF50 explains why we recommend it.

Still asking yourself “Which facial is right for me?”

If you are not sure, call us on 09 534 3390 and one of our therapists will talk you through the options, or book online and we will fine-tune the treatment once we have seen your skin in person. Our beauty therapists know their stuff, and we’re a friendly bunch who really care about your skin as much as you do, so we’ll make sure to recommend something that will make your skin feel and look good!

FAQs: How to choose the right facial

How do I know which facial is right for me?

Match your main skin concern to a treatment, then adjust for your skin type and for how much time and commitment you have. Dehydration points towards the Hydrating Facial Therapy with 100% Collagen, for instance, while dark spots suit Pigment Therapy. If you are unsure, the Thirsty Skin Facial is built around whatever your skin needs most, and our therapists assess your skin at the start of every appointment.

What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is a skin type that produces less oil, while dehydrated skin is short on water and can come and go with the weather, your routine, and your environment. Dehydration can affect any skin type, including oily and combination skin, so skin that feels tight and looks dull by mid-afternoon despite a shiny T-zone may need hydration rather than oil control.

What should I tell my therapist before a facial?

Tell us about any retinol or retinal, exfoliating acids, medications, allergies, recent sun exposure, cancer treatment, or pregnancy, because each can change which products and techniques suit you. Every facial at Gaia Day Spa begins with a skin assessment, and we adjust the treatment to what we find.
