Do I need an extended bikini wax?

Not sure whether you need a bikini wax, an extended bikini wax, a Brazilian, or something in between? Here’s how to figure out which waxing service is right for you.

Waxing terminology can vary quite a bit from salon to salon, and the bikini area is where the vocabulary gets particularly varied. Bikini wax, extended bikini wax, Brazilian wax – each one describes something slightly different, and knowing what each covers makes it a lot easier to book the right waxing service for what you actually want. Here is a clear guide to what each option involves, and how we approach it at Gaia Day Spa.

What a regular bikini wax covers

A standard bikini wax tidies up the hair that would be visible outside a pair of briefs or underwear. Think of it as a clean-up along the sides and across the top of the bikini line – the areas where hair might poke out from a standard pair of knickers. It is the most conservative option, and a great starting point if you are new to waxing or simply want things neat and tidy without removing much hair.

What an extended bikini wax covers

Sometimes called a French bikini wax, an extended bikini wax takes things a step further. Where a standard bikini wax follows the line of everyday underwear, an extended bikini wax is designed more with a bikini bottom or a pair of high-cut underwear in mind. It removes hair that would be visible in skimpier swimwear, clearing a bit more from the sides and potentially a little further in, while still leaving some hair in place. Think of it as the middle ground between a tidy bikini line and a Brazilian.

What a Brazilian wax covers

A Brazilian wax removes most or all of the hair from the front, sides, and back, including the intimate area (labia and bum). It is the most thorough option, but as mentioned above, bare is not mandatory. Many clients book a Brazilian simply because it gives their therapist the most flexibility to customise the result, removing what is visible in swimwear or high-cut underwear while leaving whatever they are comfortable keeping.

So do you need an extended bikini wax?

While we don’t offer a standalone extended bikini wax at Gaia Day Spa, we think our menu gives you more flexibility than a fixed “extended bikini wax” option would, anyway. Our Bikini Wax covers the standard bikini line, tidying up what would be visible in everyday underwear. Our Brazilian covers everything, though there is absolutely no requirement to go completely bare – our beauty therapists can remove as much or as little as you like within that service, including removing hair that’s visible and leaving the labia/bum alone, or removing everything except a strip, triangle, or square of hair if that is your preference. Our Full Leg and Bikini combines a full leg wax with a bikini tidy, which works beautifully if you have hair growth that extends beyond the standard bikini line into the upper thigh area.

While the terminology around bikini waxing varies considerably from salon to salon, this is precisely why a good conversation before your appointment makes all the difference. What one salon calls an extended bikini wax, another might call a full bikini, deep bikini, or French bikini The label matters less than knowing what result you actually want, and that is something we can work out together.

Please don’t feel embarrassed

This is important, and we mean it genuinely: Our beauty therapists have seen everything, and nothing about your body or your hair growth is going to surprise or concern them. If your hair extends further than the standard bikini line, that is completely normal and not something to feel self-conscious about before your appointment.

The most useful thing you can do is have a quick chat with your beauty therapist before your service begins. Tell them what you are working with, what swimwear or underwear you have in mind (better yet, bring them along), and how much hair you would like removed. They will guide you toward the right service and make sure you leave with exactly the result you were after.

Not sure which waxing service to book?

As a general guide: If you want to tidy up your bikini line for everyday wear, book a Bikini Wax. If you want to be comfortable in a bikini bottom or high-cut underwear without going fully bare, book a Brazilian and let your therapist know you want to keep some hair. If you have more significant hair growth extending toward the thigh, a Full Leg and Bikini might be the most efficient option.

And if you are still not sure, just reach out before you book. We are happy to talk it through and make sure you are in for the right thing. Nothing is too much to ask, and nothing is embarrassing. Give us a call on 09 534 3390 and one of Gaia Day Spa’s friendly beauty therapists will set your mind at ease and ensure you’re comfortable and confident.
