A Brazilian wax doesn’t have to be scary! Here’s what actually happens, how to prepare, and how to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
If you’ve been considering a Brazilian wax but feel unsure about what actually happens, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most talked-about waxing treatments, and also one of the most misunderstood. At Gaia Day Spa, we believe feeling informed and comfortable is just as important as the treatment itself.
A Brazilian wax is a kind of bikini wax that removes hair from the front, back, and everything in between. How much is removed can be tailored to your preference. Some clients prefer complete hair removal, while others choose to leave a small “landing strip” or shape. Your therapist will always check in with you before starting, so nothing feels unexpected or rushed.
Before your appointment
For the best result, hair should be around 5-7mm long. If it’s too short, the wax may not grip effectively. If it’s a little longer, your therapist can trim it for you. Try to exfoliate gently a day or two before your appointment to help prevent ingrown hairs, but avoid exfoliating on the day itself.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment and avoid applying moisturiser, body lotion, or oils beforehand. You might want to take paracetamol beforehand. If you are menstruating, we can still do the Brazilian wax if you’re wearing a tampon or moon cup and there is no visible blood – to ensure hygiene and comfort. Just let us know so we are aware (and so we don’t accidentally wax your tampon string!)
If you’re feeling nervous, that’s completely normal, and we understand. Our beauty therapists are experienced professionals, and this is a treatment they perform often. Also, we’ve all had Brazilian waxes ourselves, so we know what it’s like and what you’re going through!
When you arrive for your appointment
You’ll be shown into one of our private treatment rooms, where our massage bed will be set up for you with towels to drape yourself, plus a disposable cleansing wipe and disposable underwear you can wear instead of your own undergarments. If you want to keep your own underwear on, you can, but be aware that sometimes wax can get on them – and it’s difficult to remove. If you want to go without underwear completely, that is also okay.
We’ll give you clear instructions on how to position yourself on the massage table, then we’ll leave you to get undressed and get ready. We’ll knock on the door and wait for you to tell us to come back in – no one will walk in on you half-naked! – and then we’ll make sure you are comfortable before we get started.
During the treatment
Your beauty therapist will be wearing gloves. We will apply warm wax to your skin in small sections using a spatula, and will then remove it quickly before moving on to the next spot. We’ll briefly apply pressure to your skin directly after removing the wax, which can help alleviate any lingering stinging or discomfort. While waxing can be uncomfortable, particularly in sensitive areas, most clients are surprised by how manageable it is, especially when the wax is applied correctly and efficiently. Usually the first application or two is the worst, and then you get used to it.
When it comes to sensitive areas, your beauty therapist will work on one side at a time, supporting your skin and only uncovering the areas we need to wax. We will make sure that your dignity is as intact as possible – no one will be bum-up on our massage tables with everything exposed!
Your beauty therapist will guide you through the process, checking in as needed and adjusting if you’re feeling tense. Breathing steadily and relaxing your muscles can make a noticeable difference. And if you want to stop at any time, that’s okay. We can take a break, or you can decide you want to have a simple Bikini wax instead and try for a Brazilian wax another day!
At Gaia Day Spa, your comfort and dignity are always prioritised. Professional draping, clear communication, and respectful care are part of every treatment.
After your Brazilian wax
After waxing, the skin can appear slightly red or feel warm. This usually settles within a few hours. Your therapist will apply a soothing product and talk you through aftercare.
For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid heat, friction, and activities that cause excessive sweating. This includes hot baths, saunas, gym sessions, and tight clothing. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid exfoliating until the skin has settled.
Regular exfoliation a few days after your appointment can help prevent ingrown hairs, along with using recommended aftercare products.
How often should you wax?
Most of our bikini and Brazilian waxing clients return every four to six weeks. Over time, hair often grows back finer and more slowly, making treatments more comfortable and results longer-lasting.
A Brazilian wax is a personal choice, and there’s no right or wrong reason to book one. Whether you’re heading off on an island holiday with a suitcase of bikinis, or you just want to not deal with shaving down below, our goal is for you to feel relaxed, informed, and well cared for.
