Do you really need a moisturiser with SPF?

Reaching for a moisturiser with SPF each morning is a great start. But with UV levels as high as ours here in New Zealand, it pays to know whether your skincare routine is actually protecting you.

If there is one question we hear quite a lot from clients, it’s a version of this: “I already use moisturiser with SPF in the morning – is that enough?” It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is: It depends. Used correctly, a quality moisturiser with SPF is one of the most useful things you can put on your skin. Used carelessly, it offers a false sense of security.

What a moisturiser with SPF actually does

SPF stands for sun protection factor, and it measures how effectively a product filters ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. There are two types of UV rays to understand: UVA rays, which penetrate deeply into the skin and are the primary driver of premature ageing, pigmentation, and long-term DNA damage; and UVB rays, which cause sunburn and are directly linked to skin cancer.

A broad-spectrum SPF product protects against both. This is non-negotiable. Always check that your moisturiser with SPF is labelled broad-spectrum, because some products only address UVB rays and leave your skin exposed to the more insidious ageing effects of UVA.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand recommends a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for daily use, which blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays. For those spending extended time outdoors, SPF 50 or higher offers meaningfully better protection. SPF 15, which appears in many moisturisers, provides some benefit but is generally not sufficient as your sole form of sun protection – particularly here in Aotearoa, where UV radiation levels are among the highest in the world.

The real benefits of combining moisturiser and SPF

For most people with a normal daily routine – commuting, working indoors, running errands – a well-formulated moisturiser with SPF 30 or higher delivers real, meaningful protection. It also offers some practical advantages that a separate sunscreen does not.

The most obvious benefit is simplicity. Fewer products in your morning routine means you are more likely to actually use them. Consistent daily application of even a moderate SPF is far more effective than sporadic use of a higher one. A moisturiser with SPF also tends to sit more comfortably under makeup than a dedicated sunscreen, particularly for those with combination or oily skin who find heavier formulas problematic.

Beyond convenience, many modern SPF moisturisers are genuinely sophisticated formulations. They often combine hydrating actives like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides with sun protection, meaning you are addressing multiple skin concerns in a single step. For busy clients, this matters.

Where moisturiser with SPF falls short, and what to do about it

Here is something the Gaia Day Spa team of beauty therapists feels strongly about. Research published by the British Association of Dermatologists found that people applying moisturiser with SPF missed an average of 16% of their face, compared to 11% when applying dedicated sunscreen. The area around the eyes – one of the most common sites for skin cancer – was most frequently missed, with 21% of that region left unprotected when using moisturiser versus 14% with sunscreen.

The same research noted that people tend to apply moisturiser more thinly than sunscreen, which means they are not receiving the full SPF benefit stated on the packaging. To achieve the protection level on the label, you need to apply approximately a quarter teaspoon to the face, which is more than most people use.

What this means in practice:

  • Apply moisturiser with SPF generously and consciously, working the product into the eye area as carefully as possible.
  • On days when you will be spending extended time outdoors, layer a dedicated broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen over your moisturiser.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours during prolonged sun exposure. SPF moisturiser applied at 7am will not protect you at 1pm.
  • Never rely on SPF layering. An SPF 15 moisturiser under an SPF 15 foundation does not give you SPF 30. Formulations are not additive in that way.

Choosing the right moisturiser with SPF for your skin type

Not all SPF moisturisers are created equal, and the right one will depend on your skin’s individual needs.

  • Dry or mature skin benefits from richer formulations that combine humectants and emollients with broad-spectrum protection. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and squalane alongside your SPF.
  • Oily or combination skin does better with lightweight, non-comedogenic gel or fluid textures that will not block pores or contribute to congestion.
  • Sensitive skin generally responds better to mineral (physical) sunscreens, which use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them chemically. These tend to be gentler and less likely to cause irritation or reactivity.

All skin types in New Zealand should be paying close attention to this. We have some of the highest UV radiation levels in the world, and the risk of UV-related skin damage is present year-round, not just in summer. Daily SPF is not optional here.

How moisturiser with SPF fits into your wider skincare routine

A moisturiser with SPF belongs at the final step of your morning routine, applied after any serums, treatments, or targeted actives. At night, switch to a plain moisturiser without SPF, as your skin does not need it while you sleep, and some SPF ingredients are best not left on skin unnecessarily overnight.

If you are using active ingredients like retinol, AHAs, or vitamin C in your routine, sun protection becomes even more important. Many of these actives increase photosensitivity, meaning unprotected skin is more vulnerable to UV damage and pigmentation. If you are investing in serious skincare, protecting that investment with daily SPF is simply non-negotiable.
