Your bikini wax aftercare routine matters more than you think. Here’s what to do – and what to skip.
You’ve booked your bikini wax, you’ve survived it, and now your skin is smooth and looks great. Job done, right? Not quite. Good bikini wax aftercare starts the moment you leave the salon (preferably in loose clothing). What you do in the 48 hours after your waxing appointment – and in the days that follow – makes a real difference to how your skin looks and feels, and how long those results last. Here’s how to make the most of your bikini wax aftercare.
The first 48 hours
Your skin is more vulnerable than usual immediately after a wax. The hair follicles are open, the skin is sensitive, and it needs a little breathing room. For the first 48 hours, keep it simple.
Avoid hot showers, baths, swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms – heat and moisture can cause irritation and increase the risk of infection while follicles are still open. Stick to a lukewarm shower if you need to wash. Skip the gym if you can, or at least change out of sweaty clothing quickly afterwards. Avoid sun exposure on the waxed area, and hold off on applying fake tan for at least 48 hours.
Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear and clothing. Tight waistbands and synthetic fabrics create friction against freshly waxed skin, which can cause redness, irritation and ingrown hairs. This is genuinely one of the most important things you can do.
What to avoid putting on your skin
For the first day or two, keep products simple and gentle. Avoid anything heavily fragranced, any exfoliating acids, and anything you wouldn’t use on sensitive skin. A light, fragrance-free moisturiser is fine. Aloe vera gel is great if your skin feels irritated or warm. What you don’t need is anything harsh or active while your skin is still in recovery mode.
The ingrown hair question
Ingrown hairs are the most common post-wax concern, and the good news is that they’re largely preventable with the right routine. Pubic hair is naturally coarser and curlier than other body hair, which makes it more prone to growing back into the skin rather than outward, so a little extra care in this area goes a long way.
The key is gentle, regular exfoliation, but timing matters. Don’t exfoliate for the first 48 hours after your wax. After that, exfoliating 2 to 3 times per week using a soft body scrub or exfoliating mitt helps remove the dead skin cells that can trap new hair growth beneath the surface. Use light, circular motions and don’t over-scrub. The goal is gentle maintenance, not aggressive treatment.
Keeping the area moisturised also helps. Hydrated skin makes it easier for new hair to grow through cleanly.
But if you do get an ingrown hair…
Resist the urge to pick or squeeze. This introduces bacteria and can cause infection or scarring. Instead, apply a warm compress to the area for a few minutes to soften the skin, continue with gentle exfoliation, and keep the area clean. Most ingrown hairs resolve on their own. If you notice signs of infection – significant swelling, pus, or increasing pain – it’s worth seeing a healthcare professional.
Keeping your results longer (aka making the most of your bikini wax aftercare)
The final piece of your bikini wax aftercare routine is consistency. To get the most out of your wax and make your next appointment easier, moisturise the area daily once you’re past the initial 48-hour window, stay on a consistent waxing schedule (every four to six weeks is ideal), and avoid shaving between appointments. Regular waxing over time tends to result in finer, sparser regrowth, which means less irritation and fewer ingrowns down the track.
