Back to basics: What is hyaluronic acid, and why is it good for my skin?

Hyaluronic acid: The name alone doesn’t really give anything away. So what is this skincare ingredient anyway, and why is it good for my skin? Let’s go back to basics and learn a bit more about hyaluronic acid.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, particularly in the skin, that helps to keep it hydrated, plump and healthy. It is a type of glycosaminoglycan, which is a long chain of sugars that can hold on to water molecules, allowing it to retain moisture in the skin. It is a clear, gooey substance that is produced by the body and it is also found in many skincare products.

Why is hyaluronic acid so good for the skin?

Hyaluronic acid is good for your skin because it has several beneficial properties that can improve the overall health and appearance of the skin. Some of these include:

  1. Moisturising: HA can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it an excellent ingredient for hydrating the skin and keeping it plump and hydrated.
  2. Anti-aging: By keeping the skin hydrated, HA can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity and firmness, and make the skin look more youthful.
  3. Soothing: HA has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to soothe and calm irritated skin.
  4. Non-comedogenic: It is non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores and cause breakouts.
  5. Suitable for all skin types: HA is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and can be used by any age group.

It’s a great ingredient to look for if you’re looking to improve your skin’s hydration, reduce fine lines, and improve your skin’s overall appearance.

How much hyaluronic acid should I look for in skincare products?

The amount of hyaluronic acid in skincare products can vary depending on the product and its intended use. It’s recommended that you look for products containing at least 1% HA, for optimal hydration and anti-aging benefits. However, it’s important to keep in mind that a higher concentration of HA does not necessarily mean the product is more effective. The product’s formulation, the other ingredients that are combined with it, and the way it is being used also make a difference.

It’s best to consult with a skincare professional to determine the best concentration of HA for your specific skin type and concerns. They can recommend the right product with the right concentration of HA to achieve results you are after.
