Your complete waxing guide

Smooth, soft, and long-lasting results – our ultimate waxing guide covers everything you need to know, from prep to aftercare.

Curious about waxing, but not sure where to start? Or maybe you’ve been booking regular appointments but always wondered if you could be getting more from the experience. Either way, you’re in the right place. This waxing guide is your friendly companion – equal parts honest advice, therapist tips, and the kind of “wish someone had told me” wisdom that makes everything less intimidating.

At Gaia Day Spa, we know waxing can feel a little mysterious if you’ve never done it before. You might wonder: Does it hurt? Will my skin react? Is there something I should do to make it less awkward? These are the sorts of questions we hear every day, and the good news is: waxing doesn’t need to be stressful or scary. When you know what to expect, it’s easy to relax and even enjoy the process.

Our waxing guide – by the pros

Honestly, shaving can be a drag. You get prickly the next day, miss a spot, and there’s always that risk of nicks or razor burn. Waxing, on the other hand, pulls hair from the root, so you’ll stay smoother for much longer. Over time, regrowth will feel softer and finer, so it just gets easier. And honestly, there’s nothing quite like that post-wax, “I can’t stop touching my legs” feeling.

If you’re new to waxing, our comprehensive waxing guide is here to hold your hand (figuratively, unless you need a squeeze in the treatment room). We’ll cover what to do before your appointment, what actually happens at the spa, how to look after your skin afterward, and how to deal with anything unexpected.

There’s a lot of advice out there: Friends, YouTube, TikTok… But nothing beats talking to someone who does this every day. The friendly beauty therapists at Gaia Day Spa have been doing waxes for years – and we wax, too, not just clients! – so we know what we’re talking about.

Why wax?

Waxing does more than just remove hair. It gently exfoliates your skin, helps prevent clogged pores, and can leave you with a natural glow that lasts. The big advantage? Smoothness for two to four weeks, depending on your hair type and cycle. And at Gaia Day Spa, your experience matters. We only use high-quality wax and soothing products, always with your comfort in mind. This waxing guide pulls together all the best therapist advice, straight from the experts, with no sugarcoating.

One thing clients always say is that once they try professional waxing, they never want to go back. The difference is real, from the results you see to the way you feel in the room. Our job is to put you at ease, work quickly and gently, and send you home feeling fabulous.

How to prep for your waxing appointment

A little prep makes everything easier! As this waxing guide will show, the right steps before your appointment help you get better results, feel more comfortable, and reduce any chance of irritation or ingrown.

Let it grow (within reason)

For waxing to work, your hair needs to be just the right length – about half a centimetre, or the size of a grain of rice. Too short, and the wax can’t grab it; too long, and it might be more uncomfortable. If you’re not sure, ask your therapist! We’ll never judge (promise).

Gently exfoliate

A day or two before your wax, treat your skin to a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt. This helps remove dead skin cells, keeps pores clear, and can even make waxing hurt less. Skip anything harsh; no aggressive scrubs or exfoliants, especially on sensitive areas.

Clean, dry skin

Show up with clean, product-free skin. Skip lotions, oils, fake tan, or heavy creams on the day of your appointment. This helps the wax adhere better and means you’ll get more even results.

Timing is everything

If you have your period, or the days right before, you might feel more sensitive. If possible, plan around your cycle. If it’s unavoidable, don’t stress! Just let your therapist know, and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable.

Dress for success

After your appointment, your skin will love you for choosing loose, comfy clothes (think soft pants or a floaty skirt instead of skinny jeans or tight leggings). Save the gym trip for tomorrow; your freshly waxed skin will thank you.

Mindset matters

Feeling nervous is totally normal, especially for your first time. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Your therapist has seen and heard it all, and there are no silly questions in the treatment room.

So what can we wax?

Let’s talk about your options! Gaia Day Spa offers waxing for almost every area: Legs, arms, underarms, face, and of course, the bikini zone. If you’re not sure what to book, here’s a quick rundown.

Legs and arms: Classic choices for anyone who loves the feel of silky skin. Whether you go for half or full legs, or want arms smooth for weeks, waxing is the way to go.

Underarms: Quick, effective, and you can forget about stubble or that awkward “five o’clock shadow.”

Face: From brows to sideburns to lip and chin, waxing gives a clean, defined look. Brow shaping, especially, is best left to an expert.

Bikini area: There’s something for everyone here…

  • Bikini wax: Just the edges, for a tidy look that works with most swimwear.
  • Extended bikini wax: Removes more from the sides and top, perfect for higher-cut styles or just a bit more tidying.
  • Brazilian wax: Everything goes (front, sides, and sometimes the back), for the smoothest finish.
Your therapist will walk you through exactly what to expect, use proper draping, and keep the whole process as comfortable and private as possible. If you’re ever unsure, just ask!

A note on male waxing

Waxing isn’t just for women! Plenty of men are choosing smooth, hair-free skin too. At Gaia Day Spa, we welcome male clients for waxing on a case-by-case, POA basis. If you’re curious about trying waxing for the first time, or you’ve been disappointed by rushed or impersonal experiences elsewhere, you’re in safe hands with us.

Our therapists approach every treatment with professionalism, discretion, and an open mind. Whether it’s back, chest, or brows, we’ll always have a friendly chat beforehand to make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident. If you have questions about what’s possible, or you want to discuss waxing a particular area, just give us a call or mention it when you book.

What’s it really like to get waxed?

This part is a lot less scary than it sounds. Your therapist will always start by cleansing the skin to remove oils or any stray product. Then, warm wax is applied in small sections, and removed quickly, taking hair out by the root. It’s over before you know it.

At Gaia Day Spa, we choose the wax that’s best for your skin and the area being treated. Hard wax is our favourite for delicate spots (like your bikini line or face), because it grips the hair without sticking to the skin, making removal gentler. Strip wax works wonders for larger areas like legs and arms. We use premium Italwax products, which are specially formulated to be gentle on your skin.

A little sting is normal, especially if you’re new, but most clients say it’s much less painful than they expected. And your therapist will check in with you the whole way through. Need a moment? Just say so. After waxing, we always apply a soothing lotion or gel to calm your skin and reduce redness.

You might be surprised how quick it all is. And yes, if you need to hold someone’s hand (or squeeze a stress ball), we’ve got you covered.

Waxing aftercare

What you do after your appointment is just as important as the waxing itself. The best results last longer and feel better with a little aftercare. This waxing guide has all the tips you need for keeping your skin calm, smooth, and happy.

Take it easy for 24 hours

Avoid hot showers, baths, steam rooms, saunas, swimming pools, and sweaty workouts. Your pores are open and your skin is a bit more sensitive, so keep things cool and clean.

Hands off!

As tempting as it is to keep touching your smooth skin, resist the urge. Hands carry bacteria, which can cause irritation or breakouts.

Wear loose clothing

Soft cotton or natural fibres will help your skin breathe and prevent chafing or irritation.

Soothe and moisturise

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, aloe vera gel, or a soothing balm recommended by your therapist. Products with tea tree or witch hazel can help reduce redness and prevent bumps.

Exfoliate gently (but not yet)!

Wait two to three days, then start gently exfoliating every couple of days to keep dead skin away and help prevent ingrown hairs. Use a soft mitt or mild scrub; no need to go wild.

Skip heavy products and fake tan

For the first day or two, avoid perfumed lotions, fake tan, or anything harsh on the skin.

Book a follow-up!

Regular waxing really does get easier, and it helps keep skin looking its best. Most people come in every four weeks or so, but listen to your skin and find your own rhythm. But if you want to get into the habit, book your appointments ahead of time and then you’ll never have that “Whoops, I left it too late and now it’s a jungle!” moment.

Things to be aware of post-wax

Even with the best care, sometimes your skin just needs a little TLC. Here’s what to expect, what’s normal, and when to check in with your therapist.

Redness or bumps

It’s completely normal to see some redness or tiny bumps after waxing, especially your first few times. These usually fade within a few hours. Applying a cold compress or aloe gel can help.

Ingrown hairs

Despite your best efforts, ingrowns happen. The best prevention is gentle, regular exfoliation and good moisturising. If you get one, don’t pick or squeeze. A warm compress and a dab of antibacterial cream usually do the trick. For stubborn ones, see your therapist for help.

Itchiness or dry skin

Keep the area moisturised with a gentle, unscented lotion. If itchiness continues, avoid anything that might be drying your skin (hot showers, harsh soaps) and reach out for extra advice.

Breakouts

Occasionally, you may see small white bumps or pimples, especially if you have sensitive skin. Keep the area clean, avoid touching, and use a product with tea tree or witch hazel if needed.

If in doubt, ask! Every body is different. If something feels off, or if you’re worried about a reaction, call your spa or pop in for advice. Your therapist is there to help, not judge.

What are the benefits of waxing?

There’s something incredibly satisfying about running your hand over freshly waxed skin. But the benefits go beyond just that first day! Sticking with a regular waxing routine (every four to six weeks) leads to finer, softer, and even sparser hair growth. Your skin feels smoother, and most people find treatments become more comfortable over time.

This waxing guide wouldn’t be complete without reminding you that consistency is key. Regular waxing can actually help reduce sensitivity, because your hair grows back at different rates and your follicles become weaker. You’ll likely notice fewer ingrown hairs and much less of that post-shave itch.

Most clients love booking their next appointment before they leave, because life gets busy, and it’s one less thing to worry about.

Why can’t I just do it at home?

If you’ve ever tried a DIY wax at home, you’ll know it’s not quite as simple as the packaging promises. Sure, at-home waxing kits are everywhere, but there’s a reason so many people come back to the pros after one kitchen-counter disaster. Professional waxing isn’t just about convenience; it’s about expertise, hygiene, and comfort.

A trained therapist knows exactly how to apply and remove wax for the best results, and can safely reach tricky spots without leaving patches or causing unnecessary pain. Pros use high-quality waxes that are gentle on your skin (no bargain-bin, one-size-fits-all strips here) and tailor their approach for your skin type, hair texture, and even the season. Plus, you never have to worry about double-dipping, unclean tools, or awkward angles.

Professional waxing also means less risk of bruising, burns, or those dreaded ingrown hairs that can happen when technique or temperature is off. And there’s something so relaxing about letting someone else do the work, with none of the mess to clean up afterward. If you want truly smooth, long-lasting results and peace of mind, leave it to the experts. Your skin will thank you.
